They arise from the arachnoid " cap " cells of the arachnoid villi in the meninges.

The dural venous sinuses within the dura mater surrounding the brain receive blood from the brain and also are a point of entry of cerebrospinal fluid from arachnoid villi absorption.

The fluid then flows around the superior sagittal sinus to be reabsorbed via the arachnoid villi ( or granulation villi ) into the venous sinuses, after which it passes through the jugular vein and major venous system.
